What is FlexCtrl?
FlexCtrl is a highly modular software that can be used as a central real-time broker in an embedded system. The real-time database forms the heart, surrounded by clients, drivers, and the configuration system. The configuration system defines a set of "Process Variables" (PVs) that collectively describe the system's data points. The runtime system with the real-time database brings these PVs to life, allowing clients to interact with them.
Generic clients include the historian client, alarm database, and logging and monitoring tools. Standard drivers are provided to enable external communication, such as EtherCAT, Modbus, or IEC 60870. Special drivers are developed based on customer-specific hardware. All clients use the FlexCtrl Toolkit to communicate with the real-time database in a unified way.
FlexCtrl implements a portion of IEC 61131-3, allowing customers to program their own algorithms and functions in conjunction with FlexCtrl.

- What needs to be connected?
On one side: Legacy systems without security or standardization, such as machine parks in a factory hall, medical devices in a hospital, or control equipment in an energy distribution station.
On the other side: Central systems that are operated on-site (SCADA, MES, ERP) and are mostly cloud-based.- Goal:
Establish a seamless but secure, bidirectional connection between both worlds.
- Challenges:
In most cases, there is no simple 1:1 mapping between these two worlds. While connecting devices to central systems is relatively simple, securing the connection from the central system to the devices is far more complex.
- Solution with FlexCtrl:
FlexCtrl connects a heterogeneous installation base with a central system and overcomes these challenges through its modular architecture and unified communication via the real-time database.
